Neelambari musical show


‘Neelambari’, a musical show and fund raising programme, in memory of the beloved poet Gireesh Puthenchery, by his friends and wellwisherse, was peroformed at the packed Swapna Nagari Ground in Kozhikode last Saturday. The function commenced with the lines of Ashtapathi ``Vande mukunda hare..’’ sung by Nikhil, which was presented in `Devasuram’. Yesudas, P. Jayachandran, M.G. Sreekumar, Chithra, Sujatha, Ilaiyaraja, Johnson, Ouseppachan, M. Jayachandran, Raghukumar, Rajamani, Mohanlal, Dileep, Nedumudi Venu, Kavya Madhavan, Padmapriya, Samvritha Sunil, Manoj K. Jayan, Biju Menon, G. Venugopal, Sreenivas, Swetha, Manjari, Gayathri, Rimy Tomy, Devanand, Vijay Yesudas, Biju Narayanan, Afzal, Sathyan Anthikad, Ranjit, Jayaraj, Kamal, Lal Jose and V.M. Vinu were there to pay homage to Gireesh.

Evening at 7.15 Mohanlal lit the `nilavilak’ to inaugurate the function. Later Ilaiyaraja appeared on the stage. He shared his memories with Girish, “When we joined to compose the songs for ‘Kaala paani,’, an impressed Girish asked me to accept a gift for having tuned favourite songs. But I only wanted a promise from him that he would not drink alcohol. But he didn’t keep his word.’’ For the memory of Girish, he requested to sing the song `Attirambile Kombile...’’ in the film `Kaala Pani’. M.G. Srekumar and Chitra sung the song and the hours long programme began.

Several songs were rendered as flowers of love. Among those were ‘Amma mazhakarinu…’ (Yesudas), ‘Kannu nattu…’ (Jayachadran), ‘Deena dayalo…’ (Gayatri), ‘Kanakamunthirikal…’ (Venugopal), ‘Thamara kurivkku…’ (Manjari)., ‘Ethrayo janmamayi…’ (Sreenivas and Sujatha), ‘Aarorol pular mazhayil…’ (Vijay and Rimy Tomy) ‘Karimizhi kuruviye…’ (Devanad and Sujatha) and ‘Yamuna veruthe…’ (Swetha).

A song written by Kaithapram and composed by Thej Mervin as a tribute to Gireesh was sung by Sudheep Kumar.

Director Ranjit, who had conceptualised and coordinated the show said that it was a huge success that they could meet their target of Rs. 50 lakhs, an amount to be presented to Gireesh's family.

Girish was admitted to a private Hospital in Kozhikode after he suffered a stroke on 6 February 2010.
He was twice operated upon, but his condition did not improve and he suffered a brain haemorrhage and died at the hospital on February 10, 2010.
He was survived by his wife Beena and two sons Jithin Krishnan and Dinanath.

MALAYALAM lyricist and screenplay writer Girish Puthencherry, is no more. He passed away on February 10, 2010, due to brain hemorrhage He was 48 and is survived by his wife and two children. He was the son of Pulikkal Krishna Panicker and Meenakshiyamma in Puthenchery near Ulliyeri village in Kozhikode district.

His father was an Astrologer and Ayurvedic practitioner and his mother was a Carnatic musician. Girish was one of the most prolific lyrics writers in the recent history of Malayalam cinema, having written lyrics for more than 300 films.

Beginning his career in the 1990 film “Enquiry”, Girish went on to write lyrics for more than 2,500 songs in over 300 Malayalam films. In addition, he also wrote the screenplay for well known movies like Vadakkumnathan, Pallavoor Devanarayanan etc.

His first popular hit songs were from the movie Johnny Walker. Some of his other popular songs came from films like Johnny Walker, Thenmavin Kombathu, Devasuram, Narasimham, Aaram Thamburan, Vadakkumnathan, Summer in Bethlehem, Meesha Madhavan, Krishankudiyil Oru Pranayakalathu, Rasathantram, Achuvinte Amma etc. Girish was presently writing the script of a film called ‘Raman Police’. Reacting on the news, veteran Malayalam film director Kamal, considered himself fortunate to get all the best songs of Girish in his film.

Girish, a fabulous lyricist, won numerous awards in his career including multiple awards from the Kerala State Government; Asianet Film Awards .He won the Best lyricist award seven times to his credit. A wonderful talent indeed! He had such a vast repertory ranging from fun numbers like Shanthamee Rathriyil ( Johnny Walker ),Pazhanimala Muruganu ( Narasimham ) etc to romantic numbers like Pinakkamano ( Ananthabadram ), Ethrayao Janmamayi( Summer in Bethlehem ), Attinkarayorathe ( Rasathanthram ) to classicals like Gange ( Vadakkumnathan ), Harimuraleeravam ( Aaram Thamburan ) etc to emotional hits like Innale Ende Nenjile( Balettan ), Amma Mazhakkarinu Kanniranju (Madambi) etc. His last release was – Happy Husbands.

His death is surely a great loss to Indian Cinema and Malayalam Cinema in particular.

Kerala Government on Wednesday decided to extend a solatium of Rs 5 lakhs to the family of noted lyricist Girish Puthenchery, who died last week.

This was announced by Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan during his media briefing on cabinet decisions.

The cabinet also decided to give an amount of Rs.One lakh to noted muscian M G Radhakrishnan towards his treatment expenses.
